First thing you have to do is look for the Sterling label on the item. On silver setting pieces the word sterling is on the back of the handle of the utensil. If the word sterling is not on there the odds are that it is a plated place setting. Of course antique or vintage pieces will have makers marks on those same locations since they were made before the Sterling label was universally recognized.
